Pros: Relatively fast-acting, minimal side-effects. At least as far as something that works on serotonin is concerned. People who take it for bipolar depression don't bitch about it as much as other antidepressants.
Cons: Zoloft (sertraline hydrochloride) has a Discontinuation syndrome , similar to Effexor (venlafaxine) for many people. Gradual tapering off is important, if you have to stop taking the medication..There is a case report of exacerbation of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) when taking Zoloft, but it appears to be rare.
For Zoloft, these are the side-effects that you really need to know:
Most Common: Nausea, Headache, Dry Mouth, Sweating, Sleepiness or Insomnia, Diarrhea or Constipation, Weight Gain, Loss of libido
Slightly Rare:
Lethargy, Apathy ( Can be intense if you get these, but typically lasts 2 weeks or less)
Very Rare:
Uncontrolled eye movements, Discharge of breast milk
